MICROCHIPPING
Microchipping at Berwick Village Vet
We have many clients ask us about microchipping and whether it is necessary. If you have recently welcomed a new furry friend into your family and are wondering whether you need to get them microchipped, we’ve popped together some important information for you.
What is microchipping?
A microchip is an essential method (and legal requirement) of identifying a pet and returning him or her to their rightful owners. It involves the implantation of a microchip about the size of a rice grain underneath the skin of a pet and organising the registration of that chip to you. This means that if your pet ends up lost anywhere in Australia, you can be identified as the pet’s owner and contacted to have your pet safely returned back to you. The microchip has no battery, uses no energy and lasts for the duration of the pets’ life.
Why is microchipping important?
Microchipping is important as a microchip allows for an animal to be easily identified by a scanner that reads microchip numbers as it scans the pet. The scanned number is then able to be checked in a registry which will have the details of the animal’s owner.
It is estimated that tens of thousands of pets unfortunately go missing nation-wide every year. This is because they are not listed on a national database and therefore cannot be returned to their families when they are found.
It is compulsory that all cats and dogs older than 3 months old are registered with a Victorian local council to be microchipped. This is compulsory as a microchip allows us vets to quickly identify and contact the owner of an injured pet, to be promptly reunited and plan their pet’s treatment.
We highly recommend that you get your pet microchipped so that if they go missing – whether it be because of loud thunderstorms, bright fireworks, or various other reasons, they will be registered and directly reunited with you.
Book your pet in for an appointment with us to be microchipped. If they are a new kitten or puppy, we can also organise their vaccinations and do a free health check.
